  • Description

Comedian Bob Hope has made what he says was his final Christmas tour entertaining U.S. servicemen overseas. He has made his annual pilgrimage of humour on 22 occasions...and the last nine journeys have included Vietnam on the itinerary.

In the past Hope has played to at least three audiences in South Vietnam...this time the only large number of G.I.'s was at the Tan Son Nhut airbase near Saigon, so he made only one appearance there.

As has become the custom. Hope was accompanied by a bevy of beautiful girls...all beauty queens...plus Miss World, Australia's Belinda Green.

During the show, the comedian, in serious vein, told the audience of his disappointment that peace had not yet come.

After the performance ha was presented with South Vietnam's highest civilian award, the Kim Khanh medal.

SYNOPSIS: On Christmas Eve United States servicemen at the Tan Son Nhut airbase near Saigon welcomed comedian Bob Hope in his only South Vietnam appearance this year. It was the comedian's ninth visit to the war-torn country.

In all Bob Hope had made 22 annual humour pilgrimages to G.I.'s serving abroad, but he says this was his last. In the past he has made at least three appearances in Vietnam, but this year the only large group of servicemen was at the airbase which was his only stop. Normally his act has included mildly derogatory references to the North, but on this occasion it seemed the script had been written when peace seemed imminent, and there were no such jokes. But the wise-cracking comedian broke off his humour at one stage to tell the audience of his disappointment that peace had not yet come. After the show he was presented with South Vietnam's highest civilian award.

As has become the custom, Hope was assisted by a bevy of beautiful girls.. every one a beauty queen from somewhere in the world. And in spits of earlier doubts, this year's Miss. World, Belinda Green from Australia, was also there to cheer up the servicemen so far from home.
