    WORK IS GOING AHEAD RAPIDLY ON THE BUILDING OF A DEEP-WATER PORT AT LOME, CAPITAL OF TOGO IN WEST AFRICA. IT IS A MASSIVE TASK DREDGING A HARBOUR AND BUILDING DOCKS ON A COASTLINE THAT IS NATURALLY DEVOID OF INLETS.

    THE PORT IS BEING BUILT WITH FINANCIAL AID FROM WEST GERMANY. THE GOVERNMENT OF TOGO FEELS THAT THE NEED FOR DEEP-WATER FACILITIES AT LOME IS VERY PRESSING. OIL BROUGHT TO TOGO AT THE MOMENT HAS TO BE DISCHARGED AT LAGOS IN NIGERIA AND BROUGHT INTO TOGO BY RAIL AND ROAD. OTHER CARGOES HAVE TO BE UNLOADED ONTO LIGHTERS ANCHORED OFF THE COAST AT LOME - AN EXPENSIVE OPERATION, OFTEN SUBJECT TO DELAYS BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER.

    TOGO IS INCREASING HER EXPORTS OF COFFEE, COCOA, MILLET AND PEPPER AND THE NEW PORT IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE A CONSIDERABLE BOOST TO THE YOUNG COUNTRY'S ECONOMY.
