  • Description

Soccer...and World Cup hosts Argentina lost two-nil to Uruguay in Montevideo on Tuesday (25 April). The result was not a significant set-back to Argentina's World Cup aspirations because they fielded a weak side of relatively inexperienced players.

SYNOPSIS: Many of Argentina's established stars were missing from the match so that other players could be given a final try-out before the World Cup. As it was, they proved inferior to the uruguayans, although they set up some useful attacks. Their centre-forward Humberto Bravo was unlucky not to score??? here.

The Uruguayans -- who have not qualified for the World Cup finals in June -- showed they have a useful team, and they soon had the make-shift Argentinean side on the defensive.

In Argentinean attacks, number nine, Bravo always looked most dangerous.

In defence they looked shaky and nervous whenever Uruguay attacked. There was no score in the first half.

In the second-half, the Uruguayan strikers, fed by a dominant midfield, found numerous gaps in their opponent's defence. But for some superb saves by Argentinean goal-keeper, Hector Baley, they would have scored several times, with Fernando Morena their most constant threat.

In goal at the other end, Rodriguez also produced some good saves.

In the 74th minute, Manero finally found the net for Uruguay, to put them ahead one-nil.

The Argentineans tried hard, but never looked like beating Rodriguez in goal.

Eight minutes before the end, Morena rounded Baley and scored a second goal for Uruguay.
