  • Description

Miss Carol Heiss of the United States won the World Amateur Figure Skating Championship for the third successive year on Saturday, February 17th, when she skated to a clear victory on the Paris rink.

The American girl, one of the most polished skaters ever seen in the competition, had been working hard for the championships, and, when the final result was announced, the tension became too much and she burst into tears.

In second place was Ingrid Wendl (Austria) and Anne Walter took third place. She also represented Austria in the championships.

Dianne Peach, the British champion, finished fifth, and Patricia Pauley, another of the British competitors, finished eighth.

In the ice dancing championships, the British and European Champions June Markham and Courtney Jones retained their world title with little difficulty.
