Background: INTRODUCTION: The existing Agreement of Association between Cyprus and the European Economic Community is due to expire next month and talks began in Brussels on Monday (16 May) on its renewal.
SYNOPSIS: The discussions took place at the Common Market headquarters.
Leading the delegation from the Republic of Cyprus was the Director General of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mr George Eliades, who said he hoped for a broadened agreement.
The Economic Community Commission was represented by Mr Pierre Duchateau, a member of the Commission's External Affairs Directorate.
The Cyprus Agreement of Association is related by the Community to its Mediterranean policy, which also takes in Greece and Turkey. The agreement is ??? affected by strained relations between Greece and Turkey and the partition of Cyprus following the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.
