  • Description

A large crowd watched seventeen-year-old swimmer tim Shaw break his own world record in the four-hundred metres freestyle event at the American National Amateur Athletic Union Swimming Championships in Kansas City on Thursday (21 August). Shaw beat his Long Beach, California, team mate Bruce Furniss, the world record holder for the two hundred metres freestyle. Shaw swam the race in three-minutes-fifty-three-point-thirty-one seconds, six-tenths of a second inside his own record, set earlier this year.

In the women's two hundred metre backstroke event favourite Melissa Belete of Silver Spring, Maryland cut a second off her own American record with a 2.18.6 second swim. Melissa set her previous record during a gold medal performance in the 1972 Olympics in Germany.

Marsha Morely of Illin?? also set a new american standard in the hundred metre women's breaststroke. Nearly a thousand swimmers are competing in the four day meet which is serving as trials for the Pan-American Games to be held in Mexico City in October.
