Background: Thirty-three survivors from the Liberian tanker Tien Chee - which was in collision with the British freighter Royston Grange in the River Plate off Montevideo early on Thursday (May 11) with the feared loss eighty-two lives - were landed at La Plata 35 miles (55 kms) south of Buenos Aires on Thursday night (May 11).

Eight of the tanker's crew were reported missing.

All the survivors from the tanker were Chinese, except for the captain - who has British nationality - and its Argentine pilot. They had been picked up by an Argentine coast-guard cutter.

One of the tanker's crow said he saw "a ring of fire" all round the British ship after the collision. He had been on duty on the tanker's bridge when the Royston Grange loomed out of the fog. There was a crash as the two ships struck, and he jumped overboard, swimming for his life as flames raced across the water.

The british Government has ordered an inquiry into the collision, which left the British vessel ablaze, and apparently without survivors.
