Background: The leader of the People's Republic of the Congo, President Marien Ngouabi, led the ceremony in Brazzaville on Monday, 13 August, when the country honoured the memory of those who fell in the Congolese Revolution. He placed a wreath on the steno erected in memory of those who fell during one of the decisive moments of the Revolution.

At the prison they clashed with security forces, and three trade unionists were killed. There then followed three days of riots and public disturbance, culminating in the abdication of the then President, Abbe Fulbert Youlou.
