  • Description

Ceremonial balloons drifting lazily in the sky marked the parade grounds of the National Assembly building in Bangkok as branches of all Armed Forces of Thailand formed to take the annual Oath of Allegiance. Each year, in November, the oath is repeated. It's a simple, straightforward promise of fidelity and service, an ancient tradition in Thailand, with its origin among a deeply religious people. The protective presence of the "Tripple-Gem" Buddah is invoked, and Buddhist monks bless the men of the armed services and their nation. The Oath of Allegiance, led by the Thai Armed Forces Supreme Commander, Field Marshall Thanom Kittikachorn, says, in part, "I swear that I will...sacrifice by life for the independence and peaceful existence of my country...live a moral life...uphold and safeguard the soverignty of the King...obey my commanders...and will exercise my command fairly." The Field Marshal reminded his men and officers of the great troubles throughout the world and of the participation of some Thai units in the Vietnam war.
