  • Description

Explosions and fire a the Texaco oil refinery at Milford Haven in Wales on Sunday evening (11 October) caused extensive damage to the plant, although no casualties were reported.

The fire started in the central control section of the refinery, one of Britain's biggest, and one of three refineries on the shores of Milford Haven harbour.

The explosions which started it shattered windows seven miles away across the harbour.

Ten fire engines fought the blaze, police closed all roads, and tugs stood by in case the fire spread to a 50,000-ton tanker lying at the terminal.

Firemen brought the blaze under control after nearly two hours. The extensive damage caused has brought production to a stop at the refinery, but a company spokesman has said there is no question of any of the 250-man work-force at the plant being laid off.
