  • Description

An eight and one half inch snowfall hit the New York City area. It's been one of the coldest winters in New York in decades with low readings adding to the burden of snow removal in a big city.

Ice cakes have been floating down the Hudson river since last December and the snow and cold have lorded it over the area since Christmas. This last blizzard forced New Yorkers to abandon more than four-hundred cars.

But the biggest hazard has been fire. The City has had several bad fires in the past few days which the firemen have had to fight under terrible conditions.

Here in New York firemen turned out this evening to fight their second big fire in less than 24 hours. The flames spread rapidly from a shed behind a five-storey factory building at East Fourth Street to a six-storey tenement next door and then to three smaller tenements around the corner on Avenue C. Perhaps some 130 persons were rendered homeless.

Meantime hundreds of off-duty firemen turned out earlier in the day to help in the still-continuing search for four fire inspectors missing in the rubble of last night's fire.

One hundred firemen stayed on duty today at Wooster Street. But 500 others showed up in their own time to see if they could be of any help in locating the missing men. The bodies of two city firemen were brought out last night.....hope dwindles for the four missing inspectors. Tonight the search in the still burning rubble goes on....while the building became a dangerous structure and liable to collapse.....As many as 40 firemen at a time are digging in the debris. A raincoat of one was found....the hat of another....But no sign of the four who were trapped and probably killed when heavy machinery crashed through from the factory's top floor.

The search goes on until the victims are found. Fire Commissioner Cavanaugh ordered a general inspection of all buildings in the area. He directed that a search should begin for fire hazards and violations of the fire prevention laws.
