  • Description

Pope Paul presented rings to 20 new Roman Catholic Cardinals in a solemn mass service at St. Peter's basilica on Thursday (27 May).

The Cardinals were elevated at a consistory here on Monday (24 May).

Among them was the 76-year-old Archbishop of Hanoi, Joseph-Marie Trin Nhu-Khue. The Vietnamese prelate was a last moment addition as the Pope named the new Cardinals -- and the announcement was greeted with a roar of approval.

Most of the new Cardinals come from developing countries making the 138-man College of Cardinals more representative of the world's 650 million Roman Catholics.

There are no 120 Cardinals under the age of 80 who are eligible to elect a successor to Pope Paul after his death.

The college is made up of 70 Europeans, 12 Africans, 15 North Americans, 23 Central and South Americans, 12 from Asia, five from the Pacific regions and one remaining "in secret".
