  • Description

67 PEOPLE DIED IN PERU LAST FRIDAY WHEN AN AIRLINER CRASHED INTO THE ANDES. IT FAILED TO CLEAR THE PEAK OF CARPISH MOUNTAIN BY ONLY 25 FEET (8 METRES).

THE AIRCRAFT, A DC-6 OF FAUCETT AIRLINES, WAS ON A DOMESTIC FLIGHT FROM THE CAPITAL, LIMA, TO TINGO MARIA IN EASTERN PERU. AN OFFICIAL OF THE CIVILIAN AIR MINISTRY, WHICH IS INVESTIGATING THE CRASH, SAID THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE SIDE OF THE 10,000 FEET (3,000 METRES) MOUNTAIN "LIKE AN EGG SLAMMED AGAINST STEEL".

BROKEN BODIES WERE THROWN OVER A WIDE AREA. A GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL FROM THE NEARBY TOWN OF HUANUCO SAID THAT "HUMAN VULTURES" HAD LOOTED THE BODIES, STRIPPING MANY OF THE 62 PASSENGERS AND FIVE CREW OF CLOTHING, MONEY, RINGS AND OTHER POSSESSIONS BEFORE RESCUERS REACHED THE SCENE. POLICE ARE NOW HUNTING FOR THE LOOTERS.

THE BODIES WERE TAKEN DOWN THE MOUNTAIN TO HUANUCO. 51 OF THEM WERE GOING TO BE MOVED TO LIMA FOR BURIAL, AND THE REST BURIED IN THE LITTLE ANDEAN TOWN.

THE PASSENGERS INCLUDED MR JOHN WHITE, THE FIRST SECRETARY OF THE BRITISH EMBASSY IN PERU AND HIS WIFE, AND M. PATRICK VINCHON, ASSISTANT COMMERCIAL ATTACHE AT THE FRENCH EMBASSY AND HIS WIFE MONIQUE. THERE WERE FIVE ITALIANS, TWO BELGIANS, ANOTHER BRITON AND EIGHT UNITED STATES CITIZENS AMONG THE VICTIMS. IT WAS THE THIRD MAJOR AIR DISASTER IN PERU IN LESS THAN FOUR YEARS.
