Background: About 3,000 demonstrators marched through the Spanish capital, Madrid, on June 27, to protest against the dumping of nuclear waste in the Atlantic trench about 700 kilometres (434 miles) off the Spanish coast. The dumping of nuclear waste in the Atlantic Ocean has become a common practice in recent years, particularly by Spain and France. Various ecological movements, including Greenpeace, have staged protests against it and have tried to prevent it by entering the dumping barges. The demonstrators in Madrid also carried banners, attacking Nato and nuclear weapons in general and shouted slogans such as "Yanks go home". A day after the demonstration, Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez said his government would not take sides in a promised referendum on his country's Nato membership. Spain joined Nato last year but its integration into the Alliance's military wing was frozen by Mr Gonzalez, a Socialist, shortly after taking power last December. He indicated the referendum could be held in early 1985.
