Background: The French and Australian Prime Ministers have pledged close friendship between their two countries...healing wounds which borough them close tosevering diplomatic relations. The cause of the freeze was France's nuclear tests in the Pacific, but a decision to conduct future tests underground is believed to have cleared the way for the thaw in relations.
Australia's Prime Minister Gough Whitlam Arrived in Paris for a two-day visit on Monday (6 January)-part of European tour, which was interrupted when Mr Whitlam flew home after cyclone Tracy devastated the north Australian city of Darwin on Christmas Day.
Mr Whitlam and his host, French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac announced the new turn in relations during a banquet on Monday night.
On Tuesday (7 January), Mr Whitlam drove to the Elysee Palace, where he met French President Valery Giscard d'Eastaing and other French political leaders.
