  • Description

The first day of Henley's Royal Regatta, June 29, greeted by cold breezes and intermittent sunshine, was not encouraging for the usual elegant parade of summer fashion along the banks of the river.

Heavy winds made steering difficult in a day that was high lightened by harvard's defeat of Isis in the Thames Cup heat by three-quarters of a length. Earlier, Caius, Cambridge, had a satisfying 1 1/2 length win over the American team, St. Paul', Concord.

An excellent Eton crew set up the fastest time over achieved by an English school when they beat Pembroke College, Cambridge, in the Ladies Plate in 6 mins 52 secs. The previous best was Shrewsbury in 1957.

A total entry of 179 teams in this years Regatta comprises 18 from overseas and 161 from Britain. There were nearly 60 events on the first day.
