  • Description

Four-year-old Eric Peugeot, the motor firm director's son kidnapped from Saint-Cloud golf course two days earlier, was released in Paris late at night, Apr 14. Left by two unidentified men at a Westend bar, the boy was taken to the nearest police station before being returned to his parents safe and well.

All day long, reporters were waiting outside the Peugeot home at No. 170, Avenue Victor Hugo, hoping for further details on the case. They had been ordered by the police to leave the family alone so that the kidnappers could make contact easily.

Although the missing boy's parents remained uncommunicative, members of the family were seen leaving their homes by car at different times during the day. On one occasion M. Peugeot's sister, Mme Banzet, drove off after telling journalists: "Don't try to follow the car, you will ruin everything." Speculation was rife when M. Peugeot brought home a leather satchel and later left for an unknown destination, shortly before the end of the 48-hour time limit said to have been set for the payment of GBP35,000 ransom money.

Interpol was working on the case and more than 3,000 French police with special emergency powers continued their search throughout the country, when the boy's safe return was reported from Paris - a few hours after M. Peugeot had told the Press: "There is only one thing to do: wait and hope."
