  • Description

American Billie Jean King, the 23-year-old defending champion, took only 38 minutes to win through to the Wimbledon women's singles finals today (Thursday) for the third time in her career. On the Centre Court she crushed fellow Californian Kathy Harter by 6-0, 6-3 in one of the most one-sided semi-finals for many years.

Miss Harter, 20-year-old daughter of a tennis coach, was completely in the grip of nerves.

Only in the closing stages did Miss Harter begin to hit the ball with power and accuracy which had carried her through to the semi-final stage.

In the opening set, the long-legged youngster gleaned five points in the first five games, and only two of these were earned winners. For Mrs. King, the match was little more than a work-out for her dynamic net-rushing game.

Mrs. King will now meet Britain's Mrs. Ann Jones in the finals to be played on Saturday.
