  • Description

The spar of Douglas Fir which is fashioned into a 214 feet tall flagstaff in London's Kew Gardens was a gift of the Government of British Columbia. But soon it will be only 154 feet tall.

The reason is that it is a victim of wood rot - and parts of the top were in danger of breaking off -- and as a foot section weighs approximately one hundred-weight, that would be no joke.

The pole will be lopped in ten sections of six feet each - and each piece will be lowered to the ground - NOT dropped! The two intrepid steeplejacks are 30 year old Bob Fenn and his brother Reg, aged 27.
