  • Description

Delegates to a northern African organisation that aims to combat drought, have been meeting in the Republic of Chad.

SYNOPSIS: Eight countries comprise the organisation which is known as CILLS. It was formed just over three years ago under the initiative of the Upper Volta. Initially it consisted of representatives from Upper Volta, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, Chad and Nigeria. Since then Gembia and Cap Vert have been admitted. The group is constantly evaluating projects put forward to combat drought.

CILLS co-ordinates a wide range of activities aimed at preparing for drought and offsetting its effects. These measures include studies to predict future droughts, the development of animal and plant species that can endure such conditions, and establishing programmes of regeneration.

The latest meeting was held over three days. The president of the meeting was Captain Roasngar M'Raindoloumal, the Minister of Territorial Development and Environment for Chad. He praised the financial contributions made by member and non-member countries, but said more help would be needed this year to save the people in Cap Vert, part of Mauritania, and an area to the east of Chad. Delegates to CILLSS will meet again next April.
