  • Description

President Jaafar el-Nimeiry of Sudan made his second visit to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia on Monday (June 25), during his arbitration mission on the Somali-Ethiopian border dispute on behalf of the Organisation of Africa Unity -- the OAU. He made his first call at Addis Ababa on Saturday (June 23) and held prolonged talks with Emperor Haile Selassie before flying to the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

On his return to the Ethiopian capital on Monday he was greeted at the airport by Emperor Haile Selassie and a full guard of honour.

Relations between Ethiopia and Somalia have been severely strained for several months. Somalia Sought OAU intervention earlier this year, and accused Ethiopia of massing troops near their common border. Ethiopia has reportedly denied the accusation, counter-alleging that Somalia was amassing Soviet weapons in an apparent attempt to enforce its claim to disputed border territory.

The OAU summit conference in Addis Ababa last month (May) set up a 'good offices' committee of eight heads of state to work towards a reduction of border tension and to establish permanent peace. President Nimeiry is acting for the committee. The previous week, President Idi Amin of Uganda unexpectedly visited Somalia and Ethiopia in an earlier arbitration attempt.
