  • Description

Students from three universities in South Korean have repeatedly clashed with police over the past few days in protest against compulsory military training in South Korean universities.

Police have used tear gas on several occasion, particularly in attempts to stop the incensed youngsters from marching in their thousands into the city centre.

What they are complaining about is three hours of military training a week which was introduced earlier this year. This has become a big issue in the campaign for the April 27th Presidential election, at which President Chung-Hee Park is seeking a third term in office. The New Democratic Party candidate, Dae-Jung Kim has pledged abolition of military training at universities. In the meantime the bloody clashes with their tear gas and stone throwing continue.
