  • Description

Salvage experts are to make attempts between January 7 and 9 to refloat the ore carrier Elwood, which ran aground on a reef off Guernsey on December 26 during her maiden voyage.

The ship, which cost three-million pounds sterling (7,800,000 dollars), was launched only three months ago in Japan. It was carrying 122,000 tons of iron ore -- worth an estimated 10-million pounds sterling (26 million dollars) -- from Australia to Europe.

Twelve of the crew of 34 were taken off the ship, which had holes ripped in her side after running aground two miles off the northwest coast of the Channel Islands.

Salvage experts flew in from the Unites States and Europe and began a detailed survey into the chances of refloating the 59,000 ton freighter. The ship is American-owned.

If salvage preparations can be made in time, efforts to refloat the Elwood will be made between January 7 and 9 when the next Spring tides are due. Five ocean-going tugs took up positions around the stranded vessel.
