Background: The new Egyptian prime minister, Doctor Mahmoud Fawzy, yesterday (Wednesday) held discussions with ministers of his government shortly after he and his colleagues had been sworn-in to office by President Sadat. Doctor Fawzy's appointment, leading a virtually unchanged ministerial team, completed the immediate steps to stabilise the political situation following the death of President Nasser.

The discussions between Doctor Fawzy and his ministers were reported to have centred on the Middle East, including the conflict with Israel and domestic Egyptian problems.

Doctor Fawzy's appointment comes after more than fifty years in the field of international diplomacy. He served as Egyptian ambassador to London and the United Nations and was also Egyptian Foreign Minister. He later became President Nasser's adviser on foreign affairs.
