  • Description

TALKS BETWEEN REPRESENTATIVES OF THE GREEK AND TURKISH COMMUNITIES IN CYPRUS CONTINUED YESTERDAY (MONDAY) BUT THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT A SOLUTION HAS YET BEEN FOUND TO THE DIFFERENCES WHICH DIVIDE THE TWO COMMUNITIES.

THE GREEK CYPRIOT SPOKESMAN, MR. GLAFKOS CLERIDES, AND HIS TURKISH COUNTERPART, MR. RAUF DENKTASH, HAVE BEEN MEETING REGULARLY FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, APART FROM A RECENT BREAK WHILE MR. DENKTASH SOUGHT MEDICAL TREATMENT IN BRITAIN.

BUT NO COMPROMISE SEEMS YET TO HAVE BEEN FOUND BETWEEN THE GREEK INSISTENCE ON A UNIFIED STATE AND THE TURKISH DEMANDS FOR LOCAL SELF-RULE IN TURKISH AREAS.

THE TALKS HAVE THE OFFICIAL BLESSING OF THE GOVERNMENTS OF CYPRUS, GREECE AND TURKEY, BUT CYPRUS' PRESIDENT MAKARIOS SAID IN A RECENT INTERVIEW THAT THE TURKISH CYPRIOT ATTITUDE SO FAR DID NOT LEAVE MUCH ROOM FOR OPTIMISM. HE ADDED: "IF THE TURKS INSIST ON THEIR INTRANSIGENT PROPOSALS, PARTICULARLY ON THE SO-CALLED LOCAL GOVERNMENT ISSUE, THERE IS NO PROSPECT OF AN AGREEMENT".
