  • Description

THE ALL-ENGLAND LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WIMBLEDON TODAY (MONDAY) WERE OVERSHADOWED BY EMERSON'S SEVERE FALL AND SUBSEQUENT DEFEAT IN HIS MATCH AGAINST FELLOW AUSTRALIAN, OWEN DAVIDSON. BUT CERTAINLY THE MOST EXCITING SINGLES OF THE DAY WAS THE MATCH BETWEEN CLIFF DRYSDALE, THE NUMBER SEVEN SEED, AND UNSEEDED JAN LESCHLY OF DENMARK.

THIS FOURTH ROUND MATCH HAD BEEN POSTPONED FROM SATURDAY AND DRYSDALE WAS EXPECTED TO HAVE A COMFORTABLE WIN. BUT THE ELEGANT SOUTH AFRICAN LOST THE FIRST SET 3-6 AND WAS OBVIOUSLY HAVING GREAT DIFFICULTY WITH THE BIG SWINGING SERVICE OF THE 25-YEAR-OLD DANE.

DRYSDALE GOT HIS TWO-HANDED BACKHAND WORKING IN THE SECOND SET AND COMPLETELY TURNED THE TABLE TO WIN 6-1. THE THIRD SET WAS A TOUGH ONE AND ALTHOUGH DRYSDALE WON HE GAVE AWAY A LOT OF POINTS WHEN MISSING COMPARATIVELY EASY VOLLEYS CLOSE TO THE NET.

AT THIS POINT FEW THOUGHT THE DANISH PHARMACIST WOULD BE ABLE TO COME BACK, SINCE HE DOES NOT DEVOTE HIMSELF TO THE MAIN TENNIS CIRCUITS OF THE WORLD LIKE DRYSDALE. BUT BACK CAME THE DANE AND TOOK THE NEXT SET 6-3.

THE LAST SET WAS MOST DRAMATIC. LESCHLY WENT AHEAD 4-2 AND THEN 4-5 WITH HIS OWN SERVICE TO COME. BUT THEN HE PLAYED WHAT APPEARED TO BE HIS WORST GAME OF THE ENTIRE MARCH AND ALLOWED THE SOUTH AFRICAN TO DRAW LEVEL. LESCHLY NEARLY BROKE BACK IN THE NEXT GAME AND THE SCORE WAS DEUCE SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE DRYSDALE WON AND WENT ON TO WIN THE MATCH: 3-6, 6-1, 8-6, 3-6, 8-6.
