  • Description

HUNDREDS OF RIOT POLICE ARMED WITH PISTOLS, BATONS AND TEAR GAS SURROUNDED A COURTHOUSE IN SINGAPORE YESTERDAY (MONDAY) AS 262 PEOPLE FACED A JUDGE IN THE ISLAND REPUBLIC'S BIGGEST EVER MASS TRIAL.

THE ACCUSED, CHARGED WITH UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY FOLLOWING A DEMONSTRATION NEAR CHANGI PRISON, WRECKED THE COURT DURING THEIR LAST APPEARANCE, SMASHING CHAIRS AND BENCHES AND CHANTING MAO TSE-TUNG SLOGANS.

YESTERDAY THEY SAT SIDE-BY-SIDE ON WOODEN BENCHES IN THE MAKESHIFT COURTHOUSE -- NORMALLY A SCHOOL BADMINTON HALL -- ABOUT 10 MILES (16KMS) FROM THE CITY CENTRE, WITH BATON-CARRYING POLICE GUARDING THEM.

AT THE START OF THE HEARING, THE PROSECUTING COUNSEL SAID CHARGES AGAINST 52 MALAYSIANS ARRESTED DURING THE PRISON DEMONSTRATION HAD BEEN DROPPED AND THEY HAD BEEN EXPELLED BY THE SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT.

TWO OF THE ACCUSED -- ALL MEMBERS OF THE PRO-COMMUNIST BARISAN SOCIALIST PARTY -- WERE YESTERDAY JAILED FOR TWO WEEKS FOR IGNORING A WARNING FROM THE JUDGE AND STAMPING THEIR FEET IN COURT.

    THE TRIAL IS CONTINUING.
