  • Description

THE UNITED STATES WENT TO THE POLLS YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO ELECT A NEW PRESIDENT. LONG QUEUES FORMED OUTSIDE POLLING STATIONS AS A RECORD TURN-OUT WAS PREDICTED.

PRESIDENT JOHNSON VOTED FOR HIMSELF IN HIS TEXAS HOME TOWN OF JOHNSON CITY, WHERE HE HAS VOTED FOR 34 YEARS. HIS WIFE, MRS. LADY BIRD JOHNSON, ACCOMPANIED HIM. THEY ARRIVED FIVE MINUTES AFTER THE POLLING STATION OPENED -- WITH THE PRESIDENT SUPREMELY CONFIDENT THAT HE WOULD BE GOING BACK TO THE WHITE HOUSE FOR ANOTHER FOUR YEARS.

SENATOR BARRY GOLDWATER, HIS 55-YEAR-OLD REPUBLICAN RIVAL, ALSO RETURNED TO HIS HOME STATE OF ARIZONA TO VOTE. RANCHERS, COWBOYS, INDIANS, A BAND, AND SHOUTS OF "WE WANT BARRY" GREETED HIM AS HE ENDED HIS 88,000-MILE (142,000-KM) CAMPAIGN TRAIL. HE FORECAST HIS OWN VICTORY.

FINE WEATHER BROUGHT OUT HUNDRED OF EARLY VOTERS IN NEW YORK --- THE BIGGEST CITY IN THE STATE WITH THE MOST ELECTORAL VOTES. HELPING PRESIDENT JOHNSON WAS THE NEGRO VOTES, WHICH HAD BEEN ALIENATED BY SENATOR GOLDWATER'S STAND AGAINST THE CIVIL RIGHTS BILL. IN THIS ELECTION, MORE NEGROES ARE VOTING THAN EVER BEFORE.

NEW YORK VOTERS TRIED OUT MACHINES THAT COUNT VOTES. AND NOT ONLY FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES, BUT FOR VARIOUS STATE APPOINTMENTS, TOO.

AFTER REGISTERING WITH OFFICIALS, THE VOTER ENTERED A BOOTH, CLOSED THE CURTAINS, PULLED A LEVER ALONGSIDE THE NAME OF THE CANDIDATE HE OR SHE PREFERRED, THEN PULLED A SECOND LEVEL OPENING THE CURTAINS, WHICH AT THE SAME TIME AUTOMATICALLY REGISTERED THE VOTE.

FOR NEW YORKERS, THE BIGGEST INTEREST WAS THE SENATE ELECTION, IN WHICH MR. ROBERT KENNEDY WAS MAKING HIS BID TO BECOME THE THIRD KENNEDY BROTHER TO SIT IN WASHINGTON'S UPPER HOUSE.

MR. RUSK WAS THE FIRST CABINET MINISTER TO VOTE IN WASHINGTON ITSELF. RESIDENTS OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, SEAT OF THE NATION'S CAPITAL, WERE VOTING FOR THE PRESIDENCY FOR THE FIRST TIME.

FINALLY, A TINY SAMPLE OF HOW THE COUNTRY VOTED -- FROM THREE NEW YORK VOTERS.
