  • Description

IN LATE DECEMBER, 1968, APOLLO 8 ASTRONAUTS TOOK THESE PICTURES O THE LUNAR SURFACE. ALTITUDE...60 NAUTICAL MILES. IN MAY, 1969, LESS THAN FIVE MONTHS LATER, APOLLO 10 ASTRONAUTS WILL ALSO TAKE PICTURES OF THE LUNAR SURFACE. THEIR ALTITUDE...EIGHT MILES.

THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPH OF AN UNNAMED CRATER ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOON. IT IS ABOUT 25 MILES IN DIAMETER. THE ALTITUDE IS APPROXIMATELY 60 NAUTICAL MILES. HERE, WITH THE AID OF AN ANIMATION CAMERA ZOOM...WE CAN BETTER VISUALIZE HOW THE SAME CRATER WOULD LOOK AT EIGHT MILES. AT THIS DISTANCES, AND USING CERTAIN CAMERA LENSES, APOLLO 10 ASTRONAUTS WILL BE ABLE TO PHOTOGRAPH BOULDERS AS SMALL AS FIVE FEET IN DIAMETER...OR, ABOUT THE SIZE OF A STANDARD OFFICE DESK.

THE THREE CREWMEN WHO WILL FLY APOLLO 10 TO THE MOON, ARE ALL VETERANS OF THE GEMINI PROGRAM.

COMMANDER FOR THE MISSION IS THOMAS P. STAFFORD, WHO FLEW AS PILOT ON GEMINI 6 AND COMMAND PILOT ON GEMINI 9.

COMMAND MODULE PILOT IS JOHN W. YOUNG... WHO WAS PILOT FOR GEMINI 3, AND COMMAND PILOT ON GEMINI 10.

LUNAR MODULE PILOT IS EUGENE A. CERNAN, WHO OCCUPIED THE PILOT SEAT ALONG SIDE TOM STAFFORD DURING THE GEMINI 9 MISSION.

THESE THREE MEN...WITH A TOTAL OF FIVE GEMINI FLIGHTS BETWEEN THEM, HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO FLY CLOSER TO THE MOON THAN ANY MEN HAVE DONE BEFORE.

THE EIGHT DAY FLIGHT WILL INCLUDE LIVE TELEVISION TRANSMISSION SIMILAR TO THE ONES SEEN HERE, TAKEN DURING APOLLO 8. HOWEVER, DURING APOLLO 10, COLOUR TELEVISION MAY BE SENT BACK TO EARTH FOR THE FIRST TIME.

CHRIS KRAFT, DIRECTOR OF FLIGHT OPERATIONS, EXPLAINS THE APOLLO 10 MISSION ....S-O-F KRAFT ....4 1/2 MINUTES...

SPLASHDOWN FOR A NOMINAL MISSION IS SCHEDULED FOR APPROXIMATELY 1:00 P.M., EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME, EIGHT DAYS AFTER LAUNCH.

THE LANDING AREA WILL BE IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN, ABOUT 340 NAUTICAL MILES DUE EAST OF PAGO PAGO, IN THE SAMOA ISLANDS.
