Background: Macy's gave its Thanksgiving Day Parade November 24, and the floats were more spectacular then ever. In the lead of this 34th annual event was the Charleston West Virginia Mountain Lion band, the first of a total of 12 bands containing 1200 marching musicians.
This year's parade was called "The World of Fantasy" and featured such balloon figures as "The Gorgeous Gobbler" and classic "Popeye". One balloon figure, "The World's Happiest Dragon" was 72 ft long, 20ft high, and 36ft across.
At Times square, the crowd was estimated officially at 50,000 with the temperatures in the low 40's. Despite an eight miles per hour breeze, handlers said they had no difficulty holding the balloons.
