    THE PROCESSION BEGAN EARLY IN THE MORNING. IT WAS LED BY CEREMONIALLY DRESSED ELEPHANTS AND CAMELS. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE TOOK PART IN THE PARADE WHICH MARKS THE MARTYRDOM OF THE MUSLIM PROPHET, HAZRAT HUSSAIN, A GRANDSON OF THE PROPHET MOHAMMED.

    THE PROCESSION WENT THROUGH LUCKNOW TO THE KARBLA BURIAL GROUND. PEOPLE IN THE PROCESSION CARRIED TAZIAS - MODELS OF THE TOMB IN IRAQ WHERE HUSSAIN IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN BURIED.

    ACCORDING TO LEGEND, HUSSAIN, A CALIPH, WAS TREACHEROUSLY MURDERED 1,300 YEARS AGO ON HIS RETURN FROM MECCA WITH HIS FAMILY. HIS TOMB HAS BECOME A HOLY PLACE FOR MUSLIMS, AND THE STORY OF HIS DEATH OCCUPIES AN IMPORTANT PLACE IN MUSLIM HISTORY.

    THE CEREMONY MARKING THE ASSASSINATION HAS BEEN HELD FOR CENTURIES ON THE TENTH DAY OF THE MUHHARRUM, THE FIRST MONTH OF THE MUSLIM YEAR. THE LUCKNOW CEREMONY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT IN INDIA.

    DURING THE PROCESSION THE PEOPLE EXPRESS THEIR MOURNING BY BEATING THEIR CHESTS NOT ONLY WITH THEIR FISTS, BUT WITH CHAINS AND KNIVES.

    THE CLIMAX OF THE CEREMONY COMES AT THE KARBLA WHERE THE TAZIAS ARE TRADITIONALLY BURIED IN HOMAGE TO HUSSAIN.
