Background: Motor racing.....and the 1978 Formula One season begins in Buenos Aires on Sunday (15 January), when a full complement of 24 cars and drivers will complete in the Argentinean Grand Prix. This year's championships will be decided over 14 races-perhaps 16 if a circuit can be found for the Canadian race in October.

SYNOPSIS: Reigning champion Niki Lauda regained his title last season in a Ferrari, but behind-the-scenes friction led to his joining Brabham.

American Mario Andretti will again be in a Lotus-built John Player Special.

Last year's Argentina race winner was South African Jody Scheckter. He was runner-up to Lauda in the drivers' championship, and his Wolf-Ford should again be well to the fore.

Britain's Davina Galica makes history for Hesketh. She's the first woman to be sole??? driver for a works team.

Andretti started practice by setting an unofficial lap record.

Lauda's Brabham Alfa Romeo also went well in early practice.

Last year's race was the debut of Scheckter's Wolf. Lauda wants his first drive in a new car to be just as successful.

Many feel this could be Andretti's year. Last season he finished third in the championship....experts will study the Tyrells, now running on four wheels instead of six.

Davina Galica crashed at 240 kilometres (150 miles) an hour on the first day of unofficial practice; she was unhurt. Her car, though, was damaged after hitting a barrier.

One driver hoping for better things is 1976 world champion James Hunt driving a McLaren. Hunt, followed here by Lauda and Patrick Tambay, was fifth in last year's championship.

With Lauda gone from Ferrari, Carlos Reutemann of Argentina leads their challenge.

Tambay, moving here, ahead of Lauda and Ireland's John Watson, is Hunt's number two for McLaren-Ford.

Hunt is confident for the actual race, but Argentinean Carlos Reutemann clocked the fastest early practice time.
