  • Description

The Khmer Republic Presidential election get underway in Phnem Penh last Saturday (27 May) with meetings and a motorcycle rally in support of Marshal Lon Nel.

Two challenges will face President Lon Nol when voters got to the polls on 4 June. They come from Mr. In Tam, Chairman of the National Assembly, and from Kee Ann, former dean of the law faculty at Phnom Penh University.

Marshal Nol became the first President of the Khmer Republic last March when the then head of state, Mr. Cheng Heng, resigned in his favour.

During the rally, which was marked by the presence of military campaigners in support of the Lon Nol government, University students hung banners protesting the nomination of the former depute premier, General Sirik Matak, to the post of special presidential adviser. General Matak was forced to resign as deputy premier earlier in the year following a wave of student unrest and criticism from Buddhist monks.
