Background: The French Socialist Party, bolstered by gains in recent by-elections, opened a special Congress in Paris on Saturday (12 October). 1,500 delegates are attending the two-day meeting, which is the first of its kind since Socialist leader Francois Mitterrand was narrowly defeated in the Presidential Elections in May.

The main interest of the session will be focused on how the Socialist Party reacts to recent accusations by its powerful Communist Party ally that the alliance between the two groups is being betrayed.

The Communist charges stem from results in parliamentary by-elections last week, when Socialist voters apparently balked at voting Communist in run-off pools against Government candidates. In cases where Socialists were the front-running candidates, Communist voters apparently followed their Party's directives and voted Socialist.

Socialist leaders have been wary of being drawn into the controversy, and Monsieur Mitterrand said in his opening address to the Congress that the Socialists would "neither break nor slow down the unity of the left."
