Background: Ace British racing driver Jackie Stewart achieved his long standing ambition of winning the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday (July 29). But his triumph over the tricky circuit at Zandvoort was marred by the death of follow Briton, 25-year-old Roger Williamson, burned to death when his March-Ford crashed and burst into flames.

Following the death the whole future of racing at Zandvoort is in the balance. It has been reported that weeks before the race a group of Grand Prix drivers, including Stewart, tested the Zandvoort circuit for safety and turned it down as unsafe. They demanded many improvements before Sunday's crash. Now the death of Roger Williamson will again call into question safety precautions at the circuit.

Sunday's tragedy blighted a great piece of driving by Stewart. Ronnie Peterson in his John Player Lotus started in pole position and led for 63 of the 72 laps -- at one stage with a lead of more than 15 seconds over Stewart. But in lap 63 Stewart in his Tyrrell-Ford took the lead, and with six laps to go Peterson retired. Francois Cevert was second, also in a Tyrrell-Ford.
