    The train was returning from an outing at the south coast resort of Margate with members of a railwaymen's club, their wives and children.

    The derailment occurred as the train rounded a bend near Eltham, south of London.

    As the engine left the rails, coaches behind jack-knifed and overturned, throwing passengers through windows.

    A big team of ambulancemen and ambulances was quickly on the scene and ran a shuttle service with the injured to nearby hospitals.

    A number of passengers were trapped in the wreckage.

    Railway investigators were on the scene early this morning(Monday) as workmen began clearing the wreckage.

    Among the dead were the train driver and the chairman of the railwaymen's club.

    SYNOPSIS: Railway coaches lie among a mass of wreckage in the aftermath of a crash in which an excursion train carrying more than 300 railwaymen, their wives and children, left the rails while rounding a bend near London. The crash, which occurred near Eltham, on Sunday night, left four people dead and one-hundred-and-fifteen hurt.
