  • Description

President Anwar Sadat, addressing thousands of workers at the textile town of Mehalla el Kobra, 80 miles (125 kms) north of Cairo, at a May Day rally on Tuesday said no sacrifice was too heavy in order to achieve Victory over Israel.

The Egyptian leader, who was greeted with shouts of "We shall fight" and "We want war" from his audience, was making his first major public speech since taking office in March. The speech was broadcast live by Cairo Radio.

He described the recent Israeli commando attack on Beirut, in which three Arab guerrilla leaders were killed, as "an infringement on the honour of all Arabs." President Sadat said the Israelis felt they were able to mount such attacks because they had the full military support of the United States.

Reviewing the Middle East situation since the star of the ceasefire in 1970, the President said Israel and the United States were only interested in maintaining the peace because it was in their own interests. He went on: "Meanwhile, Israel is changing the face of Arab territory -- in the Golan Heights, the West Bank and Sharm el Sheikh. They want time, because time will change the situation in their interest."
