Background: Roy Emerson of Australia...defending champion of the U-S tennis singles championships...was hard-pressed today (September 7th) to defeat Mike Sangster of England for a berth in the tournament's quarter-final matches.
Emerson...in the match at Forest Hills in New York City...whipped the powerful Sangster, 4-6; 6-3; 6-4; 9-11; and 6-1. Sangster, who has the fastest service among the world's amateurs, was a semi-finalist last year.
Emerson turned the fifth set into a rout after scoring a key service break in the third game. Sangster's speed helped keep him alive until the fifth set...when Emerson found the range with his returns.
Earlier in the day, Mrs. Vera Sukova of Czechoslovakia, a 30-year-old housewife, gained the women's quarterfinals by coming from behind to defeat Carol Banks of the United States. Mrs. Sukova surprised the tennis world by reaching the Wimbledon final earlier this year.
