President Mokhtar Ould Daddah of Mauritania.

There are many practising Moslems in Nigeria and the country's Commissioner of Works, Major General O. E. Obada, has made the pilgrimage this year. Gambia's President the Honourable Sir Daudi Jawara, wearing the glasses, also attended the reception.

One and a half million Moslems are expected to take part in this year's ceremonies and King Khalid's government is spending more than 1,000 million pounds (1,500 million US dollars) to try to improve facilities at the crowded religious areas. Last year a fire swept through a camp of tents killing 138 people and badly burning another 150.

Gambia's President Jawara and President Nimeiry of Sudan spent some time talking to King Khalid.
