Israeli aircraft and gunboats rocketed, bombed and shelled Palestinian camps in southern Lebanon early Monday (7 July) killing 11 and wounding 15. The raids were in retaliation for the bomb attack in Jerusalem which killed 14 Israelis three days ago.
The Palestinians, whose camps in the Tyre region were attacked, said one Israeli Phantom jet was shot down in the engagement. They also claimed several naval casualties.
The pre-dawn attacks on the Rashidiyeh refugee camp on the Mediterranean coast south of Tyre and other targets in the area were followed later in the morning by an Israeli artillery bombardment near the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
The Palestinians said they shot down an Israeli Phantom while it was attacking the camp.
The Lebanese Foreign Minister, Philip Takla said he had instructed Lebanon's permanent delegate to the United Nations to complain about the latest attacks to the Security Council.
