Background: On Sunday, 11 April, two bands of tornadoes struck through six states, killing at least 172 people and injuring thousands. Damage is in the millions of dollars.

Six middle western states. . . Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Arkansas. . . were savagely struck by two wide spread bands of fast-moving tornadoes.

The twisters, as they are called in many places, began in Iowa and moved eastward to Indiana, where the largest amount of damage and greatest number of deaths were reported, At least 91 were killed in Indiana.

Near Toledo, Ohio, 8 persons were killed while riding on a bus that was blown off the highway.

A state police officer in Indiana said it was impossible to count the injured, "they were carrying them away in ambulances in load after load."
In many sections national guardsmen are standing guard to prevent looting in heavily damaged cities and towns.

Thousands of persons who have been made homeless by the tornadoes are staying in churches, college gymnasiums, and the homes of more fortunate friends.
