  • Description

In the last few weeks Singapore has become a centre of political intrigue and 'cloak and dagger' activities with agents and soldiers of fortune causing the police as much trouble as moonlight loading of ships with supplies, illegally.

The reason for all this undercover, passwording and secret meetings is that the rebel forces in Indonesia, at present fighting against the Government of President Sukarno, have set up their Headquarters in Singapore. Sympathisers and recruits arrive and leave Singapore in a steady stream, as do ships ladened with supplies bound for the rebel strongholds in Northern Sumatra.

The police at Singapore have orders to stop these activities on the Government's insistence, as it does not wish to whom favour to either party of the conflict. But the rebels still manage to operate from their various offices dotted about the city.

Our camera-man was able to contact the leaders of the rebel forces and he was permitted to shoot scenes of meetings between financers and active members of the forces. He also obtain shots of motorless sumpans being quietly rowed out to merchant ships, with loads of rice and other supplies, during the hours of darkness.

In order to avoid recognition of their more important offices the rebel representatives requested that our camera-man should not photograph more than the barest essentials of the buildings.
