  • Description

Thousands of South Vietnamese troops massed Sunday (7 February) in the northwest corner of South Vietnam preparing for an invasion of the neighbouring kingdom of Laos.

The attack on Laos was expected since 9,000 American and 20,000 South Vietnamese troops began their operation in the early hours of 23 January. The operation, under a six-day news blackout, was revealed last week.

Thousands of South Vietnamese troops were involved in the maneuvering near the border. The Americans who remained behind were engaged in air support and logistical aid for the South Vietnamese effort.

The effort is aimed at the Ho Chi Minh Trail down which come thousands of tons of supplies for North Vietnamese troops in South Vietnam and Cambodia.

While not actually entering Laos, American artillery was expected to fire into that country in support of the South Vietnamese troops and American air support was thought to be available when needed.
