  • Description

More than 15,000 Japanese tourists will arrive in Hong Kong over the New Year period and they'll be spending a record 24 million Hong Kong dollars. The Hong Kong Tourist Association says the New Year arrivals will make the Japanese the largest group of nationals to visit the colony. In the past the Americans held that distinction. The New Year period is one of two times of the year when Japan virtually closes down and its people are on the move. Because Hong Kong, with its low cost shopping, is near, thousands of Japanese head for the colony. The Tourist Association says the number of Japanese visiting Hong Kong this year is up 41 percent on 1970 and they've spent a record 375 million Hong Kong dollars. To the end of November 219,000 visitors arrived from Japan. The gambling casinos, dog races and sights of Macao are an added incentive for the holidaying Japanese. There are few empty seats on the hydrofoils across to Macao at this time of year.
