  • Description

OFF FROM PLYMOUTH WHERE DRAKE'S SHIPS SET OUT TO BEAT THE SPANISH ARMADA ... GO 14 OTHERS ... SETTING OUT TO CROSS THE ATLANTIC ALONE.

IT'S TODAY'S (SATURDAY'S) START OF THE 3,000 MILE SINGLE-HANDED YACHT RACE TO NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND AND NEW YORK.

ONE YACHT WAS RAMMED IN GETTING AWAY AND HAD TO PUT BACK FOR REPAIRS. THE RACE IS THE SECOND OF ITS KIND AND THE RECORD CROSSING TIME BY A LONE YACHTSMAN IS HELD BY BRITAIN'S FRANCIS CHICHESTER - 33 1/2 DAYS (SEE 4969/64 22 MAY).

AMONG THE RACES ARE KETCHES CUTTERS CATAMARANS AND TRIMARANS. FOR THE LIGHT WIND AT THE START, THEY PUT UP SPINNAKERS BUT AS THEY FORGED DOWN THE CHANNEL ON THE FIRST LEG OF A RACE THAT CAN TAKE UP TO SIX WEEKS, STRONG BLUSTERY WINDS AND POOR VISIBILITY LAY AHEAD.

MOST OF THE RACERS ARE BRITISH - THE OTHERS ARE FRENCH (E. TABARLY IN THE KETCH PEN DUICK II AND J. LACOMBE IN THE SLOOP GOLIF), AN AUSTRALIAN (W.B. HOWELL IN THE CUTTER STARDRIFT) A DAME (A. PEDERSEN IN THE KETCH MARCO POLO), AND A NEW ZEALANDER (DR DAVID LEWIS IN THE CATAMARAN REHU MOANA).
