Background: WEST GERMAN PUBLISHER AXEL SPRINGER, OWNER OF THE COUNTRY'S TOP SELLING NEWSPAPER BILD ZEITUNG, TODAY (SATURDAY) DEMANDED TOUGH MEASURES AGAINST STUDENTS WHO BLOCKADED THE PAPER'S VARIOUS PRINTING HOUSES THROUHTOUT THE COUNTRY LAST NIGHT. YESTERDAY AFTERNOON (GOOD FRIDAY) WEST BERLIN LEFTWING STUDENTS DEMONSTRATED ALONG THE KURFUERSTENDAMN IN VIOLENT PROTEST AGAINST THE SHOOTING OF THE YOUNG REVOLUTIONARY LEADER RUDI DUTSCHKE. STUDENTS ALLEGE THAT THE SPRINGER EMPIRE ENCOURAGE THE INTOLERANT MOOD THAT LED THE DUTSCHKE BEING SHOT.

THE DEMONSTRATIONS - IN WEST BERLIN, HANOVER, ESSEN, MUNICH, FRANKFURT, AND ESSLINGER, ALL SPRINGER PUBLISHING CENTRES - ARE SAID TO FOLLOW A CALL BY WOLFGANG LEFEBVRE, WEST BERLIN CHIEF OF THE SOCIALIST GERMAN STUDENT LEAGUE, THE MOST MILITANT AND BEST-ORGANISED UNIVERSITY GROUP.

AS ELSEWHERE, THE DEMONSTRATORS PROVED DIFFICULT TO CONTROL, EVEN WHEN DRENCHED WITH WATER CANNONS, AND HARRIED BY MOUNTED POLICE CORDONS. A NUMBER OF WATER CANNONS WERE RAMMED WITH OTHER VEHICLES, AND POLICE MOTORCYCLES SET ON FIRE. LATER THE PROTESTERS MOVED TO THE CITY HALL (RATHAUS SCHOENEBERG) AND DEMANDED TO SPEAK WITH THE GOVERNING MAJOR, KLAUS SCHUELTZ.

DUTSCHKE IS NOW IN HOSPITAL, CRITICALLY ILL WITH A BRAIN INJURY. A 23-YEAR-OLD HOUSE PAINTER IS BEING HELD UNDER GUARD IN HOSPITAL IN CONNECTION WITH THE SHOOTING.
