  • Description

INDONESIAN DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN DJAKARTA YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST LAST WEEK'S SEIZURE OF AN INDONESIAN SHIP BY AMERICA BUT QUICKLY DISPERSED AFTER BEING TOLD BY AMERICAN OFFICIALS THAT THE SHIP WAS TO BE RELEASED.

THE INDONESIAN FREIGHTER, JOHANNES LATUHARAHRY, WAS DETAINED A WEEK EARLIER AFTER A SUIT WAS BROUGHT AGAINST ITS OWNERS, DJAKARTA LLOYD, BY AN AMERICAN FIRM CLAIMING THAT THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT HAD UNLAWFULLY CONFISCATED ITS RUBBER PLANTATIONS IN 1959. THE SUIT WAS DISMISSED IN A LOS ANGELES COURT YESTERDAY.

ABOUT 300 YOUTHS AND OTHERS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN DJAKARTA TO PROTEST AGAINST THE DETENTION. IN AN ADDRESS TO THE DEMONSTRATORS, MR. KARTODIHARDJO SAID HE WOULD DEMAND ABOUT 3,000,000 DOLLARS FROM THE UNITED STATES IF THE FREIGHTER WAS CONFISCATED.

THE DEMONSTRATORS LEFT ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER BEING ASSURED BY AMERICAN OFFICIALS THAT THE SHIP WOULD BE RELEASED. THE LOS ANGELES COURT RULED THAT IT HAD NO JURISDICTION IN THE CASE AND SAID THE SHIP HAD PERMISSION TO SAIL IMMEDIATELY.
