  • Description

PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA OF KENYA AND HIS MINISTERS ATTENDED A MILITARY PARADE IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) AS THE REPORTED SPLIT IN HIS CABINET WIDENED. THE TWO PROMINENT PERSONALITIES IN THE REPORTED DISSENSION, VICE-PRESIDENT OGINGA, AND THE MINISTER FOR COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, DR KIANO, ATTENDED. ALL THREE OF KENYA'S ARMED SERVICES TOOK PART IN THE PARADE. CELEBRATING MADARAKA DAY, THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF KENYA'S ATTAINMENT OF INTERNAL SELF-GOVERNMENT.

VICE-PRESIDENT ODINGA HAS BEEN CRITICISED FOR HIS SUPPORT FOR COMMUNISM. THE CRITICISM CAME TO A HEAD ON MONDAY WHEN DR KIANO AND FOUR MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT DEMANDED HIS RESIGNATION FOR ALLEGEDLY ACCUSING PRESIDENT KENYATTA OF NOT MAINTAINING HIS PLEDGE OF NON-ALIGNMENT. AND YESTERDAY CAME REPORTS THAT OTHER CABINET MINISTERS WERE OPPOSING THE VICE-PRESIDENT.

(VICE-RESIDENT ODINGA ALSO ACCUSED BRITAIN AND THE UNITED STATES OF CAUSING TENSION IN KENYA. IN A SPEECH ON SUNDAY, HE SAID: "WE HAVE STILL ANOTHER WAR TO FIGHT, A WAR WHICH IS BEING WAGED BY THE IMPERIALISTS." HE SAID HE WAS A FRIEND OF THE SOVIET UNION ONLY BECAUSE THEY WERE "HONEST AND SINCERE PEOPLE.")
PRESIDENT KENYATTA TOUCHED ON THE ISSUE BEFORE THE PARADE BEGAN. REJECTING COMMUNISM FOR KENYA, HE SAID THE EAST HAD "AS MUCH DESIGNS UPON US AS THE WEST AND WOULD LIKE US TO SERVE THEIR OWN INTERESTS." HE SAID IT WAS "NATURAL" THAT KENYANS SHOULD DETEST WESTERN COLONIALISM, BUT, HE WENT ON, "IF WE ARE TRULY NON-ALIGNED WE MUST NOT AVOID MAKING FRIENDS WITH THOSE WESTERN COUNTRIES WHO EXTEND HONEST CO-OPERATION."
HE ALSO ANNOUNCED GOVERNMENT PLANS TO INTRODUCE FREE MEDICAL SERVICES FOR ALL CHILDREN AT GOVERNMENT CLINICS AND HOSPITALS. TO THE DELIGHT OF THE CROWD, HE SAID THAT IN FUTURE JUNE 1 WOULD BE A PUBLIC HOLIDAY.

A FLY-PAST BY THE AIR FORCE LED THE PARADE, THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF ITS INAUGURATION. THE NAVY MARCHED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN PUBLIC AFTER ITS FORMATION LAST DECEMBER. SO DIDI TROOPS, SOME CARRYING DIGGING EQUIPMENT. THEN CAME THE HEAVY ARTILLERY.
