  • Description

A VIET CONG TUNNEL COMPLEX HAS BEEN DISCOVERED AND DEMOLISHED BY AUSTRALIAN TROOPS IN A VILLAGE NORTH OF THE AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE BASE IN PHUOC TUY PROVINCE, 45 MILES NORTHEAST OF SAIGON. THE VILLAGE IS ON A KNOWN VIET CONG SUPPLY ROUTE.

THE AUSTRALIANS, MEMBERS OF THE 2ND BATTALION, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT FROM ENOGGERA, QUEENSLAND, WERE ON A ROUTINE PATROL WHEN THEY FOUND THE COMPLEX. THEIR DEMOLITION EXPERTS, "TUNNEL RATS", AS THEY ARE KNOWN, WERE CALLED IN TO DESTROY THE COMPLEX WITH TNT AND GRENADES.

FOOD SCRAPS AND REFUSE LEFT BEHIND REVEALED THAT THE TUNNEL HAD BEEN USED BY THE VIET CONG TO AVOID DETECTION FROM THE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT WHICH FLY 10 HOURS A DAY OVER PHUOC TUY PROVINCE FROM THE NEARBY TASK FORCE BASE.

MANY OF THE UNDERGROUND COMPLEXES ARE SOLIDLY CONSTRUCTED WITH ESCAPE ROUTES TO NEARBY JUNGLE. OVERHEAD REINFORCEMENT CAN BE UP TO 10-FEET THICK.
