Background: The International Motorcycle meeting at Donnington Park in England on Sunday (9 July) was a day of heartache and triumph. Heartache for veteran rider Mike Hailwood who was leading the field in the T.T. Formula One race when just two laps from home he crashed. But it was triumph for Dave Potter who scored two convincing wins.

SYNOPSIS: As the competitors lined up for the Formula One race all eyes were on veteran rider Mike Hailwood -- number four, riding an 864 c.c. Ducati.

Hailwood, who now lives in New Zealand, returned to racing at the Isle of Man this year after an absence of 11 years. On Sunday he took an early lead, he was followed by Ron Haslam number two and Steve Manship, number 18.

Hailwood had won easily at the Isle of Man and later at Mallory Park. But at Donnington when he was leading with just two laps to go, he came off his machine and allowed Roger Marshall riding a Mochek Honda to win.

The line-up for the International super-bike race for bikes up to 1,000 c.c. contained many famous names including Barry Sheene and Mike Grant.

But it was Dave Potter, number eight, riding a Ted Broad 750 Yamaha who took an early lead.

Potter was hotly pursued by Sheene, number seven, on a 650 Suzuki and Grant, number 10, on a 750 Kawasaki.

Earlier in the day Potter had won the MCN Superbike race when he had successfully held off the challenge of world champion Sheene. Now Sheene was out for revenge but Potter was good enough to resist him.

Potter won the race in a time of 19 minute 25.5 seconds -- and average lap speed of 90.67 miles an hour (145 k.p.h.)) to give him his second victory of the day.
